My name is Meg Tiller and I’m a fifth-year PhD candidate in the Religion department, helping with our union. I was elected at last month’s membership meeting to serve on the Election Committee alongside Wes Wise (Mathematics) and Megan Cassingham (Chemistry). I’m emailing you to provide notice of the upcoming Local 872 election, where we’ll be electing our first-ever Executive Board, two head stewards, and dozens of union stewards. A brief primer on each elected position can be found here.

Consistent with the democratically ratified bylaws, the Election Committee will issue a notice of the nomination period opening on Monday, April 22nd. Nominations will be open from April 22nd-28th. The election itself will take place via an online vote next month, May 13th-14th, 2024.

Every member in good standing is automatically nominated for every position. To accept nomination, members must submit a candidate statement of no more than 500 words. Candidates may also submit a photo, which is encouraged but not required. Monday’s notice will provide detailed instructions on how to submit your acceptance of nomination.

Only members can run for an elected position and vote for elected leadership. If you are not already a member, you can sign up here.

The election timeline is as follows:

  • April 22nd-28th: Nomination period
  • May 5th: Candidate statements submitted to membership.
  • May 13th: Voting opens, online ballots sent out to all members. (If you do not receive a ballot on the 13th, there will be a link to request a ballot.)
  • May 14th: Voting closes
  • May 15th: Election results announced
  • May 20th-21st: Runoff election, if necessary, for positions where no candidate is voted in by a majority vote

Any election-related questions can be directed to elections@gswoc-usc.org.
