January 9, 2023

Happy New Year and welcome back! We are hitting the ground running this semester as we prepare for the next steps in our union victory.

Upcoming Events
We held our first Collective Bargaining training last week. If you missed it, you can join us for our second session on Tuesday, January 17th at 5PM. RSVP here.

We will also be holding our first coffee hour of the year on Thursday, January 12th at 12PM in the Viterbi Quad (map). Bring your friends and join us for some coffee, donuts, and conversation! RSVP here.

Updates and Timeline to Union Election
We have been working with USC to come to a union election agreement. If no agreement is reached, a National Labor Relations Board hearing will take place on January 18th, with the election to likely follow shortly after. Keep a lookout for date and location updates!

USC has indicated that it does not consider Graduate Students working in research-related jobs who are compensated through NSF fellowships, Dornsife fellowships, and possibly other fellowships to be employees entitled to union rights under the National Labor Relations Act. Resolving this disagreement may be part of the NLRB hearing scheduled to begin January 18. If you are, or were, on a fellowship and would like to learn more or help reach a fair resolution, please fill out this form.

Other Updates
Meanwhile, our own Piril Negris (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Maggie Davis (Sociology) were included in the LA Times discussing the strike at University of California. ‘“They’re really reminding us that we are something bigger than ourselves,” Davis said of UC union members. “The momentum is really, really alive right now.”’ Read the article here.

As always, if you have any questions or just want to learn more, please do not hesitate to simply respond to this email. You can also fill out this short survey to get more involved, follow GSWOC-UAW on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram, or check out gswoc-usc.org
